DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, has started the online booking and pre booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet. Online booking is for students’ version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash.

Students’ version of Aakash will be available for Rs 2,500 and will be delivered in seven days. The commercial version, UbiSlate 7 is priced at Rs 2,999. The payment mode for both the tablets is cash on delivery.

The commercial version of Aakash tablet will be powered by Android 2.3 and will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory.

Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.

“The improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end,” a spokesperson of DataWind told The Mobile Indian.

The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. “The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to upgradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing,” the spokesperson said.

To book and prebook student and commercial versions respectively of Aakash tablet, users have to visit DataWind’s website and fill up the required form. In case of booking they will get a booking ID and a message which will state, “You will shortly receive an email confirmation from our support team with further details.”

In case of pre booking users will get a confirmation message which will state, “The commercial version of the Akash UbiSlate 7 would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible.”

As a matter of fact, the confirmation message a reader will see is factually incorrect as The mobile Indian had reported earlier the Aakash tablet will be available only by January end.

Datawind has however not cleared how it is going to establish the identity of students who will book the cheapest version of Aakash tablet. When The Mobile Indian contacted spokesperson of Datwind he said, “Anyone can book the student version of Aakash tablet.”

This defeats the purpose of providing students an affordable tablet as now anyone can place an order to get the tablet. Interestingly, now it has been revealed that the government has procured only 10,000 Aakash tablets for distribution in schools and colleges of the initial 1 lakh proposed.

It looks like the company was in a hurry to start the online booking process and has not done not proper homework before staring it

Bob Noyce’s nickname was the “Mayor of Silicon Valley.” He was one of the very first scientists to work in the area — long before the stretch of California had earned the Silicon name — and he ran two of the companies that had the greatest impact on the silicon industry: Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel. He also invented the integrated chip, one of the stepping stones along the way to the microprocessors in today’s computers.

Noyce, the son of a preacher, grew up in Grinnell, Iowa. He was a physics major at Grinnell College, and exhibited while there an almost baffling amount of confidence. He was always the leader of the crowd. This could turn against him occasionally — the local farmers didn’t approve of him and weren’t likely to forgive quickly when he did something like steal a pig for a college luau. The prank nearly got Noyce expelled, even though the only reason the farmer knew about it was because Noyce had confessed and offered to pay for it.

While in college, Noyce’s physics professor Grant Gale got hold of two of the very first transistors ever to come out of Bell Labs. Gale showed them off to his class and Noyce was hooked. The field was young, though, so when Noyce went to MIT in 1948 for his Ph.D., he found he knew more about transistors than many of his professors.

After a brief stint making transistors for the electronics firm Philco, Noyce decided he wanted to work at Shockley Semiconductor. In a single day, he flew with his wife and two kids to California, bought a house, and went to visit Shockley to ask for a job — in that order.

As it was, Shockley and Noyce’s scientific vision — and egos — clashed. When seven of the young researchers at Shockley semiconductor got together to consider leaving the company, they realized they needed a leader. All seven thought Noyce, aged 29 but full of confidence, was the natural choice. So Noyce became the eighth in the group that left Shockley in 1957 and founded Fairchild Semiconductor.

Noyce was the general manager of the company and while there invented the integrated chip — a chip of silicon with many transistors all etched into it at once. That was the first time he revolutionized the semiconductor industry. He stayed with Fairchild until 1968, when he left with Gordon Moore to found Intel. At Intel he oversaw Ted Hoff’s invention of the microprocessor — that was his second revolution.

At both companies, Noyce introduced a very casual working atmosphere, the kind of atmosphere that has become a cultural stereotype of how California companies work. But along with that open atmosphere came responsibility. Noyce learned from Shockley’s mistakes and he gave his young, bright employees phenomenal room to accomplish what they wished, in many ways defining the Silicon Valley working style was his third revolution.

Noyce died of heart failure in 1990, at the age of 62.

This tablet is an expression of you – not its maker.

If you buy the wrong tablet, you’re at the mercy of the manufacturer regarding how much you can customize or personalize your screens. But the beauty of Android is that you have much greater flexibility to arrange things however you want. You’ll have multiple home screens to compose and design, plus live wallpapers to express your mood and personality. The Tab also offers you the freedom of TouchWiz®, the intuitive user interface that allows you to quickly drag and drop your icons, widgets and Live Panels with only the touch of a finger. Now, reorganizing your tablet’s menus and navigational options will be simple and straightforward.

A screen so lifelike you’ll want to touch it.

The Tab’s WXGA-TFT touchscreen redefines high resolution. Every image has amazing color, radiance, and clarity to capture all the detail of real life. The Tab’s dimensions give it an aspect ratio that lets you see more of the original image, without cropping or black bars. Now when you watch a movie with $100 million in special effects, you get the full impact. When you read eBooks or emails, every letter of text is razor sharp. Video chatting is more like talking face-to-face. And when your finger touches the responsive screen, every function is smooth as silk.

Performs at a higher level. So you can, too.

Surf the internet just like on a PC, and get the full enjoyment of Adobe® Flash® Player compatible sites, games, and videos. The Dual core 1GHz processor runs every function and app effortlessly. A full gig of ram gives you plenty of memory. The Tab’s Android ™ 3.1, Honeycomb platform is the proven gold standard to perform the full range of Google services like optimized Gmail™ and Google Maps™.

Does several things at once. Sound familiar?

Multi-tasking is the new normal. None of us have time to do only one thing at a time. The Tab keeps you up-to-the-second with widgets and live panels that update constantly. And you can have more than one window open at a time to bounce around on. Access the Android Market™ for thousands of apps that keep your life moving with the speed you need. Sometimes your Tab is for work, sometimes it’s for play, and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.

Take gaming to the next level.

The Tab 8.9 is gaming heaven. It has the speed and processing power to run any Android or Adobe® Flash® Player compatible game with no buffering, stalling, downloads, or plug-ins. And the screen shows every dragon’s scale, every gold doubloon, and every sword glint with eye-popping, heart-pounding detail.

Nokia is reportedly considering selling its Vertu branch for luxurious smartphones. According to the Financial Times sources, the Finns are hoping to use the money from selling Vertu to fund their smartphone business, which hasn’t been doing so well lately.

The asking price for company is still unclear as Vertu doesn’t publish its financial results separately, but evaluation is said to be currently taking place. The Vertu annual revenue is estimated to be somewhere between €200 million and €300 million, which seems like a lot considering the small market niche that Vertu services. Furthermore, the company is said to making a healthy profit each year, though there were no specific numbers mentioned.

Nokia has, reportedly, appointed Goldman Sachs to oversee the sale of its subsidiary. Vertu is said to have attracted quite a lot of interest from private equity groups and luxury goods brands, but talks are still at early stages.
